How to Choose the Right Industrial Racking System for Your Warehouse

Industrial warehouse with pallet racking, cantilever racking and light shelving side by side

Choosing industrial racking isn’t about picking whatever looks sturdiest, it’s about matching the structure to what you’re actually storing, how you’re storing it, and the space you have to work with. Get it wrong and you either waste floor space or, worse, end up with a system that can’t safely hold what you put on it.

Start with the goods, not the catalogue

What you’re storing decides almost everything else. Palletized goods delivered in uniform loads call for pallet racking, our Iron Fist range is built exactly for this, with a reinforced beam rated to carry up to twice its stated load as a safety margin. Long, awkward, or oversized items like pipes, timber, or steel profiles don’t fit on a shelf at all, that’s what cantilever racking (our Séquoia range) exists for, with arms instead of shelves so length isn’t a constraint. Smaller, lighter items, spare parts, archive boxes, retail stock, belong on light-duty shelving like Unimondial, where the priority is picking speed, not raw load capacity.

Then check your building, not just your budget

Ceiling height determines how many levels you can realistically stack, and aisle width determines whether you need a reach truck or can get away with a standard forklift. A warehouse with a low ceiling and narrow aisles often does better with a wider footprint of light-duty shelving than trying to force in tall pallet racking that a forklift can’t actually service.

Match the racking to your handling equipment

Every racking system assumes a certain way of loading and unloading it. Drive-in systems like our Iron Fist Drive-In are built for forklifts to enter the racking structure itself along guide rails, brilliant for warehouses storing large volumes of a single SKU, but the wrong choice if you need to pick individual pallets quickly, since drive-in racking works last-in-first-out by aisle.

A quick decision checklist

Before you request a quote, have answers ready for: what you’re storing (weight, dimensions, packaging), how many distinct SKUs you handle, your ceiling height and aisle width, and what handling equipment you already own. With those five answers, choosing between our six racking ranges: Iron Fist, Iron Fist Drive-In, Séquoia, Mecano, Unimondial, and Unizinc, becomes a straightforward match rather than a guess.
